L’information dans le domaine phytosanitaire a préoccupé plusieurs précurseurs, et ce, bien avant la fondation de la Société de protection des plantes du Québec (SPPQ) en 1908. Cependant, dès le début du XX e siècle, le ministère de l’Agriculture du Québec s’est engagé dans cette voie avec la mise en place du Bureau de l’entomologie et du Bureau de la protection des plantes qui publient des guides de protection des différentes cultures. Dès 1934, des cartes-avis postées aux producteurs agricoles donnaient déjà des informations sur les ennemis des cultures et les interventions recommandées en cours de saison. Ce service fit place, en 1975, au Réseau d’avertissements phytosanitaires du Québec (RAP) dont les objectifs visaient à informer les producteurs et les vulgarisateurs agricoles sur l’évolution des ennemis des cultures, à indiquer le moment propice des interventions phytosanitaires et à orienter la recherche afin de répondre aux problèmes les plus urgents. Toujours sous la responsabilité du MAPAQ, le RAP couvre maintenant 13 groupes de cultures et rejoint les producteurs et les conseillers agricoles, les clubs d’encadrement technique et plusieurs autres intervenants. Il est un partenaire majeur de la Stratégie phytosanitaire du MAPAQ. Beaucoup d’outils technologiques ont permis d’informatiser ce réseau afin de répondre aux besoins de ce secteur.
