Abstract
Cet article analyse la réception médiatique et la littérature institutionnelle associée à la sortie du film d’Alanis Obomsawin Kanehsatake : 270 ans de résistance (1993). En s’appuyant sur cette analyse, il apparait évident que les attentes pédagogiques dirigées à l’égard de ce documentaire financé par le secteur public et produit par des Autochtones proviennent d’une croyance voulant qu’en connaissant l’Indien — le vrai — « nous » puissions faire l’expérience d’une certaine forme d’intimité panhumaine et d’une relation interculturelle. Cette expérience est rendue possible du fait qu’une forme d’indianité sanctionnée positivement par les Autochtones puisse être réconciliée avec un type spécifique de souveraineté coloniale. Je démontre que même si la voix militante et l’agentivité des cinéastes autochtones ne peuvent être réduites au discours des institutions qu’ils représentent (dans ce cas, l’Office Nationale du film), l’acte même de produire, de financer et de documenter la réalité indienne continue d’offrir à l’état nation tout comme à la presse culturelle de masse la possibilité de rétablir leur propre voie de communication avec la « chose indienne », c’est-à-dire ce dispositif rhétorique équivoque permettant à l’état de peuplement colonial de perpétuer l’héritage colonial en s’appropriant, en différant et en disqualifiant simultanément de son récit souverain tout contenu indien.
