Abstract
Dans un avis rendu public en 2005, le Haut Comité à la population et à la famille s’inquiétait du retard de l’âge à la première maternité, soulignant les risques sanitaires associés pour l’enfant et pour la mère. Cet article, à travers l’étude de la notion de maternités dites tardives, de leurs caractéristiques démographiques et sociales, des discours et préconisations qui ont accompagné la découverte du « problème », a dévoilé les enjeux sous-jacents de cette préoccupation sociale renouvelée. Nous montrons que la tentative de problématisation sociale des premières maternités tardives, présentées comme un enjeu de santé publique mais plus encore comme un véritable problème pour la société, apparaît comme une volonté de (ré)assigner les femmes à la norme procréative dominante, dans laquelle l’âge de ces dernières tient une place centrale. Le traitement social des maternités dites tardives révèle ainsi le poids des tensions normatives auxquelles sont confrontées les femmes. Il montre combien la « dissidence » de celles qui refusent de se laisser enfermer dans les temps socialement et médicalement prescrits ainsi que la signification que cette liberté peut prendre en regard de la reproduction des rapports sociaux de sexe dérangent.
