Si la Révolution tranquille a vu l’État québécois devenir la principale source de financement des institutions d’enseignement universitaire, les questionnements quant à la pertinence et l’utilisation des fonds publics ont tôt fait d’alimenter les débats concernant les relations État – universités. Dans cette veine, le contexte d’austérité budgétaire de la décennie 1990 allait ouvrir grand la voie à des changements majeurs tant dans la gestion que dans la mission même des universités.Notre attention se tournera donc vers la signature des contrats de performance en 2000-2001 entre le ministère de l’Éducation et les universités. En cherchant à remédier aux problèmes de sous-financement, ces contrats ont aussi permis de redéfinir le champ universitaire québécois selon les règles du jeu propres au champ économique.En premier lieu, nous verrons brièvement les mutations que l’université a connues selon les époques et les sociétés. Nous analyserons ensuite la question de l’évaluation de l’enseignement et de la reddition de comptes en éducation. Enfin, nous procéderons à l’analyse de discours d’un échantillon des contrats de performance, ce qui constituera la partie méthodologique du mémoire et nous permettra de tirer nos conclusions.
