Abstract
November 2006 This special issue of the Canadian Journal of Regional science deals with a major interest in regional science, the construction and critique of policies and programs in aid of regional development in rural areas. The articles are all revised versions of papers that were presented at the March 2005 international symposium in Lyon organized by the INRA (the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique--the National Institute for Agronomique Research) in France. The symposium was entitled: Territories and Challenges for Regional Development (Territoires et enjeux du developpement regional). The symposium provided an opportunity for researchers involved in the research program 'For and About Regional Development' (Pour et sur le developpement regional--PSDR) to present the results of their research and to confront them with those of other researchers, from France and abroad. The results deal with the period 2001 to 2004 and involve different research partners in five French regions (Bourgogne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrenees, Pays de la Loire, Rhone-Alpes). Given the speed of the decentralization process in France, the research reported on are innovative in the field of territorial and regional development, and combine social sciences and bio-technical approaches. The eight papers presented here were initially selected by a panel, led by Professor Amedee Mollard, scientific coordinator of the PSDR program of INRA, as potentially interesting contributions to the CJRS. They were then submitted to an independent evaluation process under the guidance of the Editor, which led to revised texts being submitted between the spring and late summer of 2006. As is customary, copyright rights were assigned to the CJRS, and the CJRS then authorized the authors to include their revised texts in a special CD-Rom publication for all the accepted texts based on papers presented at the Symposium, being produced at the end of 2006. Because this notice is included in this Letter from the Editor, it is not repeated as a footnote in the different articles. The CJRS also wishes to thank the INRA, through the good offices of Professor Mollard, for a financial contribution to help defray some of the production costs associated with the production of this special issue. It has been a great pleasure working with Professor Mollard and Ms Emmanuelle Sauboua, also of the INRA at the rime of initial preparation of this special issue.
