Devant les difficultés rencontrées en archéologie pour distinguer par simple observation visuelle divers types de quartzites constituant les objets façonnés, nous avons tenté, par une étude pétrographique sur lame mince, de trouver des critères de structure pour distinguer des ensembles dans ce matériel lithique. La granulométrie, l’aplatissement des grains, l’angulosité, le degré de recristallisation ou les minéraux accessoires peuvent être autant de caractères de différenciation observables au microscope. Cependant, ces critères ne sont retenus que dans la mesure où ils sont franchement marqués pour éliminer les possibilités de convergence non significatives. C’est ainsi que d’après ces données, nous avons pu individualiser des caractères de structures propres aux quartzites de Ramah, de Diana et de Norvège. Des objets archéologiques, dont l’origine naturelle n’était pas connue, ont été comparés aux grands groupes de quartzites ainsi définis. Même s’il n’a pas toujours été possible de trouver la source ou l’origine de la matière première, nous avons été en mesure de dire s’ils appartenaient à ces types de structure ou s’en distinguaient trop pour que l’on puisse envisager toute tentative de rapprochement. Cette méthode permet donc de donner des indications précieuses sur les grands courants d’échanges préhistoriques qui ont permis le transport de cette matière première (cf. PLUMET, 1981).
