Abstract
Karl Polanyi est considéré comme l’un des penseurs les plus importants du 20e siècle, à coté de Max Weber, John Maynard Keynes, Joseph Schumpeter, et Gunnar Myrdal. Son ouvrage le plus connu, La Grande transformation (1944), une critique puissante de libéralisme du marché, est considéré comme un classique du 20ieme cycle. Bien que l’œuvre de Polanyi ait d’abord été largement lue par les anthropologues économiques, des disciples influencés par ses idées ont été marginalisés par la communauté intellectuelle. Cependant, dans les deux dernières décennies, il y a eu une remontée remarquable d’intérêt pour son travail autour du monde et à travers des disciplines dans les sciences sociales et les sciences humaines, de même que parmi les juristes, les scientifiques, les militants et dans le milieu des politiques publiques. Karl Polanyi is considered one of the most important contributors to the social sciences in the 20th century along with writers such as Max Weber, John Maynard Keynes, Joseph Schumpeter, and Gunnar Myrdal. His seminal work, The Great Transformation, a powerful critique of market liberalism, is now considered a 20th Century classic. Although Polanyi’s work was initially widely read by economic anthropologists, scholars influenced by his ideas were marginalized by the intellectual community. However in the last two decades there has been a remarkable surge of interest in his work worldwide and across disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, and among legal scholars, scientists, policy makers and activists. The Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy, dedicated to the memory of Karl Polanyi, has been instrumental in the advancement of his ideas by providing a dynamic intellectual space for critical social discourse and by contributing to the dissemination of Polanyi’s work through numerous scholarly initiatives. This paper presents the work of the Institute, documents how Karl Polanyi’s intellectual legacy is being received by scholars, students, practitioners and civil society and policy actors around the world, and develops an analysis of the numerous fields where we can appreciate the influence of his work.
