Entendendo-se a administracao de compras no contexto do processo de logistica das empresas, estudou-se esta area nas maiores empresas industriais de Santa Catarina, com mais de 600 funcionarios, na regiao do Vale do Itajai, e das cidades de Brusque e Jaragua do Sul. Os objetivos buscaram caracterizar o responsavel pela funcao compras; verificar as funcoes, atividades, envolvimento, formas de comunicacao e responsabilidades da administracao de compras na organizacao; analisar as mudancas e inovacoes previstas na organizacao de compras, ate 2008; comparar os resultados da pesquisa com as empresas catarinenses e com os do estudo do Center for Advanced Purchasing Studies (CAPS), em industrias dos Estados Unidos da America (EUA) e do Canada, em 1995. O metodo da pesquisa foi quantitativo, descritivo, do tipo “survey”, sendo o instrumento de coleta dos dados uma replicacao, com adaptacao, do questionario utilizado na pesquisa da CAPS. Os resultados obtidos revelam um perfil relativamente diferente entre as empresas industriais norte-americanas e as empresas catarinenses. A funcao de compras nas empresas americanas e canadenses, de porte semelhante as grandes empresas catarinenses pesquisadas, tende a ter uma responsabilidade mais diversificada, centrada nas funcoes basicas de compras (compras, controle e planejamento de materiais, pesquisa de materiais e compras, armazenagem, recuperacao de investimentos e eliminacao de residuos e excedentes). Nas empresas catarinenses, a funcao de compras tende a acumular mais tarefas, quanto menor seu tamanho. Os entrevistados esperavam um crescimento do envolvimento da funcao de compras em atividades como desenvolvimento de produtos, implantacao de sistemas integrados de fornecimento (EDI, B2B, CRM etc), planejamento estrategico e relacionamento com clientes.
