Abstract
The Montreal Indoor City(MIC) which has spread over downtown of Montreal is too large and arbitrary in shape to get a clear understanding. This paper aims to have a comprehensive recognition of the MIC by the multilateral studies about it. As a result of the research, several findings are drawn as follows: First, the MIC has accomplished a high standard in environmental qualities -i.e. natural light, sense of space, variety, and image- through developing overground and underground unitedly. Second, convenience, pleasure, and publicity have been the organizational concepts of the MIC and on the basis of those concepts the MIC has been embodied by the functions of movement, shopping, and staying. Third, the MIC has grew through the several developmental phases, they are opening phase(1960s), prosperity phase(1970s), intensification phase(1980s) and settlement phase(1990s～). Fourth, there are some problems of the MIC. ①No use of Montreal's inclined topology ②Making a deep underground space due to the technical problems of subway train ③Sacrificing of outdoor pedestrian life and an excessive commercial property of indoor space. Fifth, it will be a critical paradigm shift for both Montreal and Korean cities to exploit the urban underground space for the purpose of the integration and rehabilitation of a future city environment.
