Abstract
The contemporary lesbian and gay identities center on a discourse of “coming out” whereby the individuals verbally articulate the nature of their sexuality. Parents and other family members are commonly among the first ones to witness this articulation of identity. Over the previous decades, many parents in North America have been distraught by the fact that their child has come to identify as a lesbian or gay. As a result, a rich self‐help discourse has risen, including numerous books and publications, as well as a number of support and advocacy groups, such as the Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The parental experiences and narratives form a rich area of research and theorization over the ways in which sexual identities become mediated and responded to through kinship and ideologies of family.
