Abstract
La mise sur pied du 1er régiment de France À l’automne 1942, alors qu’il ordonne la dissolution de l’armée française d’armistice, Hitler propose à Pétain de former une force armée fidèle au régime. Ce dernier saisit la balle au bond, et le général Bridoux, secrétaire d’État à la Guerre, élabore un projet d’organisation en décembre. Les troupes prévues doivent servir au maintien de l’ordre et donner une légitimité au régime à l’heure où des forces françaises considérables se constituent aux côtés des Alliés. Les Allemands, méfiants, n’autorisent dans un premier temps que la mise sur pied d’un régiment. Cette unité interarmes (infanterie, cavalerie, artillerie, génie) prend finalement le nom de 1 er Régiment de France. Plusieurs problèmes apparaissent avant même sa formation. Son contrôle est disputé au sein du gouvernement de Vichy pour passer finalement sous l’autorité directe de Laval. Le lieu de sa garnison, puis l’armement font l’objet d’âpres discussions avec les Allemands. En définitive, le régiment est éparpillé sur les départements du Cher et de l’Indre. Quant aux armes, elles restent françaises. Fin mai 1943, la campagne de recrutement est lancée. Les candidats viennent avant tout par sympathie pour le régime et par anticommunisme. À l’automne, le régiment se constitue.
