dans son roman Cantique des plaines (1993), nancy Huston aborde de facon innovatrice une panoplie de themes, entre autres : la narration, le feminisme, le postcolonialisme, l’americanite, l’identite et l’amour. or, la romanciere reserve un traitement subtil a un theme d’autant plus complexe qu’il est inhabituel : la question du temps. Ce n’est donc pas une coincidence si l’auteur a choisi un roman historique pour se pencher sur la facon dont les occidentaux concoivent le phenomene du temps. tandis que Paddon, fils d’un immigrant irlandais dans l’alberta du XXe siecle dont la vie est le pretexte du Cantique, revele les aspects theoriques de ce «sujet en or pour sa these de doctorat : l’histoire du temps — une analyse des conceptions et descriptions humaines du temps a travers les âges» (40)1, c’est le personnage de Paula, en tant que narratrice, qui met en scene les consequences pratiques d’une telle recherche. Mais d’abord, quelle est la facon habituelle dont les occidentaux concoivent le temps? quelle est «la question du temps»? C’est l’enigme de la Genese, relevee dans ses lectures de saint augustin, qui amene Paddon a entrevoir dans la cosmogonie chretienne l’existence meme d’une question : quelle temporalite precedait les paroles par lesquelles dieu a cree le ciel et la terre, c’est-a-dire par lesquelles dieu aurait «mis en marche» le temps ? dans le passage suivant, ou la portion en italiques serait augustin s’adressant a dieu, Paula delimite le terrain exact sur lequel son grand-pere construira sa theorie :
