GROUNDWATER QUALITY ANALYSIS ON SELECTED HAND-DUG WELLS IN THE CAPE COAST METROPOLIS, GHANA: A CASE STUDY OF ABURA

Abstract
Groundwater samples were collected from six selected hand-dug wells in the Abura community in view of assessing the suitability of the water for domestic purposes. The physicochemical characteristics of each week’s samples were analyzed by measuring the pH, alkalinity, turbidity, conductivity, total hardness, potassium, sodium, phosphate, nitrate and sulphate. The experimental results obtained were compared with the World Health Organization drinking water standard values. Most of the parameters were found to be acceptable. Interestingly, the potassium concentrations for all the wells were between 30 – 62 mg/L above the W.H.O. guideline value of 30 mg/L. The mean pH values for wells 1 and 4 were also found to be 5.9 ± 0.1 and 5.8 ± 0.1 respectively below the W.H.O. drinking water standard of 6.5 – 8.5. The alkalinity for well 6 was found to be 360 mg/L above the W.H.O. guideline value of 200 mg/L and wells 1, 2, 3 and 6 recorded conductivities of 1154.1, 1645.4, 1553.7 and 1342.7 μS/cm respectively above the W.H.O. standard values of 1000 μS/cm. Whereas the groundwater was found to be generally suitable for domestic use based on the parameters measured, it is not recommended for drinking purposes unless otherwise treated. . Proper maintenance of the wells was also crucial since human activities such as laundry, wastewater seepage from surrounding unlined drains and particles found in some of the wells were suspected to have greatly impacted on the quality of the water.
