Cet article est une tentative d’application des notions d’« image » et de « visage » telles que les définit Emmanuel Lévinas. Ces concepts nous permettront d’aborder la traduction littéraire, non pas comme une ressemblance du texte-source mais comme le « visage » de l’auteur représenté par son texte. Cette appréhension particulière du texte modifie également le statut du traducteur en l’intégrant dans une relation inter-humaine dans laquelle sa responsabilité est totale. Enfin, nous proposerons au traducteur de promouvoir l’exigence éthique. Non seulement il devient le garant d’une traduction dont le centre est la relation à l’étranger mais plus encore il promeut cette relation éthique avec son propre lecteur.
