La violencia familiar es un problema social comun a todas las sociedades. Sin embargo, tanto las manifestaciones del problema como los modos de resolverlo responden a las particularidades de cada una de estas sociedades. El articulo traza de manera descriptiva las principales caracteristicas del problema de la violencia familiar asi como las respuestas publicas que son producidas por la sociedad canadiense, con particular atencion a la provincia de Quebec. La construccion de las respuestas publicas implica la puesta en marcha de una serie de acciones que, para afrontar el problema, debe primero convertir una situacion privada en un asunto publico. En este proceso los movimientos feministas en Quebec tienen un rol clave mediante la combinacion de la identificacion del problema, de la intervencion y de la participacion en la construccion de las respuestas publicas. Making of family violence a public matter.The experience in Quebec, Canada Abstract Family violence is a common social problem in all societies. Howe­ver, the problem manifestations like the way of solving it respond to the particularities of each society. This article presents in a descriptive way the main characteristics of the family violence problem as well as the public answers that are produced by the canadian society, in particular the Quebec province. The construc­tion of public responses implies to carry out some actions that, in order to face the problem, in first place should become a private situation into a public matter. In this process, feminist movements in Quebec play a key role due to the identification of the problem, the intervention and the involvement in the construction of public responses. La facon dont il se manifeste ainsi que ses solutions sont toutefois tres liees aux traits d’une societe donnee. Cet article decrit les caracteristiques principales de la violence familiale et des mesures publiques appliquees pour le cas du Canada. Il etudie notamment le cas de la province du Quebec. La construction de politiques orientees vers la solution de la violence familiale implique la mise en marche d’actions faisant face d’emblee a des situations privees qui constituent plus tard une question de portee collective. Dans ce contexte, les mouvements feministes quebecois exercent un role majeur car ils aident a identifier des problemes, interviennent dans des situations concretes et participent dans les processus de formulation de reponses publiques.
