Abstract

The ${\mathrm{CoO}}_{2}$ layers in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{x}{\mathrm{CoO}}_{2}$ may be viewed as a spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice doped with charge carriers. The underlying physics of the cobaltates is very similar to that of the high ${T}_{c}$ cuprates. We will present unequivocal $^{59}\mathrm{Co}$ NMR evidence that below ${T}_{\mathrm{CO}}\ensuremath{\sim}51\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$, the insulating ground state of the itinerant antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{Na}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{CoO}}_{2}$ (${T}_{N}\ensuremath{\sim}86\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$) is induced by charge ordering.
