qui fut le quatrime Archiviste fdral du Canada de 1948 1969 ainsi que le premier Bibliothcaire national et un historien prolifique, a dchan une rvolution archivistique au pays.Rejetant plusieurs des ides d'Hilary Jenkinson et la plupart des approches de ses prdcesseurs, Lamb tait conscient d'tablir au Canada une nouvelle profession pour les archivistes et une nouvelle vision des archives.Cette modernisation a eu trois principales directions : mettre l'accent sur les archives totales en renforant l'valuation (et la destruction) systmatique et exhaustive des documents, s'attaquer aux documents d'archives du gouvernement et y tablir la gestion des documents et, enfin, tendre de faon significative les services aux chercheurs et le programme public.Tous ces projets taient soutenus par le dsir de Lamb de garder le pass au got du jour afin de satisfaire les besoins culturels pressants du pays et de soutenir la cration aprs la guerre d'un tat moderne efficace.La vision des archives inspire par Lamb -et les ides qui sont sous-jacentes -forment la toile de fond de l'intense dbat dans les trois dernires dcennies sur la nature de la profession d'archiviste et ses fonctions.Mieux comprendre les ides de Lamb permet donc de jeter la lumire sur le prsent de notre profession et ses directions futures ainsi que de clbrer un des ses gants historiques.Cet article est fond sur les crits et les documents personnels de W. Kaye Lamb, entre autres sur un mmoire non-publi sur sa carrire historique auquel l'auteur a pu acder pour la premire fois.
