Cet article presente une etude des flutes en terre fabriquees par Ataizo Mutahe pour le marche touristique a Goroka, dans les Hautes-Terres orientales de Papouasie-Nouvelle- Guinee. Le travail d’Ataizo est important parce qu’il bouscule les idees recues sur la nature de la tradition et de la modernite autochtones par rapport a la production et l’utilisation des instruments musicaux en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinee. Bien que ces flutes soient faites a la main, avec des materiaux et des technologies locales, sur la base de modeles d’instruments anciens de la region, elles representent une invention recente et sont entierement fabriquees pour une utilisation non-locale. Cet article soutient que les flutes d’Ataizo representent un modele important a travers lequel les iterations distinctement locales de la modernite peuvent etre apprehendees et les formes et pratiques artistiques locales (ainsi que celles qui ont ete introduites) peuvent etre percues comme des sources de modernite musicale en Papouasie- Nouvelle-Guinee. Ce faisant, cet article revient sur le travail de Marshall Sahlins sur la modernite autochtone dans le Pacifique, affirmant que sa theorie est trop engagee dans une division structuraliste entre les cultures de l'Occident et du Pacifique pour voir comment le habitants de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinee utilisent les resources afin d'articuler une modernite quotidiene comme celle d'Ataizo.
