Abstract
Insights from post-colonial literary theory, sociolinguistics, and the social psychology of language contribute to Bamiro's (English, U. of Saskatchewan) comparison of the nature, function, and meaning of English in the delineation of cultural and social identities in the literature of anglophone Zimbabwe and Trinabago. He finds that the identities are communicated through certain nativization strategies and the power and politics of English, and that the variations in the linguistic practices of such post-colonial writers cumulatively establish different meanings from those used in the hegemonic or putatively standard English linguistic code.
