This timely book by a psychologist actively involved in the organization Children with Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD) addresses an emergent and increasingly under recognized problem of increased driving risk for teens with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In a clear and informative manner Dr. Snyder provides an overview of the subject with practical advice about encouraging safe driving habits. The book consists of 5 chapters, an index with numerous tables and charts and hand lined drawings. The first chapter is an overview of teen driving statistics and research on teen drivers with ADHD. Although Dr. Snyder’s statistics are U.S. based, they reflect the same issues that we have in Canada. According to Health Canada motor vehicle statistics, collisions are still the leading cause of death up to age 19. Motor vehicle collisions were the leading cause of injury/death, and accounted for 48% of all injury deaths. Some 15% of all children who die do so as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Boys die at a rate that is twice that of girls. This is just the tip of the iceberg. It is estimated that for every death there are 80 more children that are hospitalized. In chapter two, Dr. Snyder reviews the behavioural characteristics of ADHD and co-morbid disorders. Research would clearly indicate that human factors account for a significant degree of the variance in many car accidents. High-risk taking behaviors have been well recognized as predictors of a range of accident-proneness including car accidents. The literature on ADHD and increased prevalence of car accidents begins in Canada with a follow-up study from Montreal by Dr. Gaby Weiss and Dr. Lily Hechtman, one of the first groups to demonstrate an increased prevalence of motor vehicle accidents in untreated ADHD. Since that time a number of other groups, notably Russell Barkley’s, have shown increased prevalence of car related accidents and impulsive driving styles in ADHD populations. In chapter three, general tips for parenting teens with difficult behaviors are outlined. In combination with chapter four, which outlines 20 steps for parents to promote safe driving behavior in teens with ADHD, and chapter five, on handling poor driving behavior, the author gives some sensible practical advice linking driving to the overall context of a teenager’s development. This book is to be highly recommended for child psychiatrists and others working with teens who have a tendency to be impulsive. The book is well written, practical, priced appropriately and is strongly recommended.
