Pour des soignants œuvrant en institution, la chambre d’intimité constitue une solution novatrice pour satisfaire les attentes des résidents souhaitant avoir une activité sexuelle. L’examen des arguments favorables et défavorables à la chambre d’intimité soulève un certain nombre de paradoxes. Elle est perçue à la fois comme un lieu d’amélioration ou de perversion, de régénération ou de dégénération, de régulation ou de perturbation, de protection ou d’oppression. À travers l’étude phénoménologique de ses systèmes d’opposition, il est possible de mettre à jour des objectifs d’intervention qui ne sont pas toujours exprimés par les démarches habituelles de planification de services. La reconnaissance des droits sexuels des résidents contribue à leur assurer une vie sexuelle privée, à protéger leur intimité sexuelle par divers dispositifs, entre autres la chambre d’intimité. L’institution peut décider ne pas se limiter à offrir un accommodement aux résidents, mais également un accompagnement qui consiste à rétablir leurs capacités de vivre une vie sexuelle épanouissante en mettant en œuvre une démarche de réadaptation sexuelle.
