Introducao: convivencias dificeis A Historia prova que convivencia entre diferentes etnias e quase sempre originadora de tensoes e conflitos, as vezes contidos por um fragil equilibrio politico, outras ocasioes eclodindo abertamente em guerras e massacres. Os exemplos sao inumeros e continuam a persistir no mundo hodierno, pois, seja qual for o continente ou nacao, ha sempre grupos minoritarios que sofrem o estigma da diferenca: os sikhs na India, os xiitas no Libano, os franceses no Canada, os arabes em Israel, os turcos na Alemanha, os angolanos em Portugal, os portugueses na Suica, etc. Os Estados Unidos da America, quer pela sua heranca historica, quer pelo facto de continuarem hoje a constituir um centro polarizador para imigrantes oriundos das mais variadas paragens, sao das nacoes que maior diversidade apresentam em termos etnicos e culturais. Por isso mesmo, e frequente falar-se no mosaico americano, no caleidoscopio de etnias, na nacao de nacoes. Inevitavelmente, e a semelhanca de outros paises, os EUA debatem-se com graves crises e problemas internos, relacionados com esta variedade multicultural. Tambem aqui as discordias e os confrontos inter-etnicos ocorrem quotidianamente e por vezes magnetizam nao apenas os interesses da nacao, mas tambem os do proprio planeta. Em 1992, por exemplo, as imagens do espancamento de Rodney King as maos da policia indignaram os afro-americanos e conduziram aos celebres tumultos de Los Angeles, que horrorizaram os espectadores de todo o mundo e relancaram nos EUA o debate em torno da raca, das desigualdades sociais, do risco dos etnocentrismos, etc. (Omi, 1994: 145, 146).
