Résumé En 2007, une campagne québécoise de cessation de tabagisme intitulée le « Défi J’arrête J’y gagne ! » a utilisé une stratégie de communication multimédia dans laquelle l’internet et le courrier électronique proposaient un accompagnement soutenant la cessation durant un an. Cette recherche examine la participation des fumeurs québécois au concours du « Défi J’arrête j’y gagne ! » (n = 25 156) ainsi que la cessation des participants. Nous examinons les facteurs à l’utilisation et l’impact des courriels sur la démarche de changement de comportement. Un formulaire d’inscription, deux sondages et une analyse de contenu sont les instruments de collecte. Le premier sondage (n = 3 119) effectué 6 mois après le début du concours mesure deux moments de la cessation (6 semaines et 6 mois) et le deuxième (n = 753) effectué un an après, mesure la cessation durant un an chez les ex-fumeurs interrogés lors du premier sondage. Une analyse de contenu a été réalisée sur les 22 courriels. Les résultats de cette étude montrent que la lecture des courriels a un impact sur la cessation tabagique à six semaines et six mois. L’accessibilité, la récurrence, la cadence, la crédibilité, la qualité du design, l’interactivité, l’adaptation au stade de changement semblent être des éléments qui pourraient contribuer au changement. Les éléments du message courriel analysés indiquent qu’ils devraient être respectueux, informatifs, succincts, compatibles et congruents avec la conception de la santé de l’internaute, et avoir des références (hyperliens) pour être porteurs de changement.
