Cet article analyse l’usage des données spatio-temporelles dans les enquêtes de public mobilisant le suivi chronométré de visiteurs d’exposition. Il met en lumière un paradoxe : ces études emploient des données séquentielles, des suites ordonnées de coordonnées spatio-temporelles, mais elles produisent des analyses ne tenant aucun compte de la temporalité de l’activité de visite. Nous avançons deux explications. D’une part, la perspective d’évaluation des expositions qui domine dans ces enquêtes incite les chercheurs à transformer l’échelle de leur analyse en passant de données centrées sur les individus à des analyses centrées sur les objets exposés. D’autre part, la standardisation des outils n’a pas favorisé l’adoption de techniques d’analyse séquentielle. Nous présentons enfin, à partir des résultats d’une enquête ethnographique sur les réceptions muséales d’une toile de maître, quelques pistes d’analyse rendant compte de la temporalité de la visite.
