Abstract
En 1717, paraissent sous la plume de Pierre-François Guyot, abbé Desfontaines (1685-1745), les Poësies sacrées traduites ou imitées des Pseaumes. L’analyse des instances liminaires de la traduction des Psaumes permet de cerner, à travers les justifications du traducteur et la finalité attribuée au texte, les conceptions esthétiques de Desfontaines quant aux activités auctoriale et traduisante. Ainsi, pour Desfontaines, la traduction des Psaumes, ouvrage à la fois agréable et pédagogique, doit se présenter sous une forme versifiée et ne pas faire l’objet d’une docile traduction littérale. Desfontaines prend donc position à la frontière entre l’auteur et le traducteur, en choisissant l’imitation plutôt que la paraphrase, pour rechercher la « fidélité » à la fois au texte de départ et à la langue et à la culture d’arrivée.
