Malia revisited : a GIS-based functional analysis of the Pre-, Proto- and Neo-palatial Occupation

Abstract
The principal aim of this study is to tailor a new position for geographical information systems (GIS) within the frame of intra-site spatial research in archaeology, and to enhance the uses of the technology in the discipline through theoretical and methodological innovation. The research seeks to fulfil this objective through four specific approaches: through a critical evaluation of the position of GIS technology in archaeology; through theoretical reconsideration of what archaeological GIS is and what we can do with GIS in archaeology; through GIS-related technical innovation; and, finally, by assembling these components and outlining two case studies from Malia, one of the largest Bronze Age settlements in north-central Crete (Greece). These two cases studies are respectively the Late Minoan IB occupation at Zeta Beta and Middle Minoan IIB occupation in Building A in the Mu Quarter. The focus in each of these two case studies is on cooking practices. The decision to think through a certain practice (i.e. cooking) while framing a discussion on materials and space, results from 'non-representational thinking'. After a general introduction (Chapter 1), the chapters feature a series of discussions that aim to reconceptualise GIS and its existing critique (Chapter 2), present two new techniques to use GIS at architectural level (i.e. metric and visual integration analysis) (Chapter 3) and bring all these GIS-related innovations together on case studies regarding cooking practices at Zeta Beta and Building A of the Mu Quarter (Chapters 4, 5 and 6). The conclusion of the research is not only that archaeological GIS can be fruitfully employed at architectural level to study everyday, routine practices. It is also concluded that Late Minoan IB occupation at building Zeta Beta and Middle Minoan IIB occupation at Building A embodied very different potentials at Bronze Age Malia when it came to everyday cooking practices.
