Al reflexionar sobre la construcción de tradiciones literarias y filosóficas, los estudios de traducción pueden contribuir a estudiar la historia de la filosofía desde una perspectiva atenta a las relaciones entre lengua y filosofía, así como también al papel que las lenguas nacionales juegan en la difusión u ostracismo de sistemas filosóficos.La importancia concedida a los idiomas parte de la constatación de que los textos filosóficos no han sido escritos, discutidos y difundidos en una lengua universal a la que todos tendríamos acceso por nuestra naturaleza racional o por nuestro buen sentido. Es preciso recordar que la tradición de una filosofía con aspiraciones universalistas ha echado mano de un conjunto determinado de lenguas. Del griego clásico a las traducciones latinas, pasando por las distintas lenguas romances hasta llegar a los modernos idiomas nacionales, la tradición filosófica es deudora de las lenguas en que se ha ido constituyendo. Con todo, no por ello habrá que asentir al relativismo lingüístico que afirma que lo expresado en un idioma es inexpresable en otro y que, por consiguiente, la filosofía escrita en alemán, por ejemplo, no puede expresarse en otras lenguas. Se trata, antes bien, de tomar conciencia de que la práctica de la filosofía implica trabajar con textos escritos en o traducidos de alguna de las lenguas que han definido el canon filosófico. En otros términos, ni un relativismo lingüístico, ni un universalismo ciego a la materialidad histórica de la filosofía.
