El desarrollo de la IP esta intimamente ligado a los parques norteamericanos Canada cuenta con una dilatada trayectoria en el campo de la interpretacion, marcada por dos rasgos: en primer lugar, la vision del patrimonio como instrumento esencial para reforzar la conciencia nacional y para fortalecer la identidad canadiens. Mediante la interpretacion se enfatizan aquellos rasgos que configuran y singularizan la nacion, como el esfuerzo de las generaciones pasadas por construir y hacer avanzar el pa is, y se ahonda en las raices nacionalistas al rememorar los principales acontecimientos que fraguaron la historia de la nacion. En segundo lugar, la valoracion del patrimonio como conjunto de bienes a legar para que puedan ser disfrutados por las generaciones futuras. Este interes por preservar y hacer comprensible el patrimonio enraiza, por una parte, con un sentimiento de nostalgia hacia el pasado ante una sociedad en transformacion, que esta abandonando la vida tradicional, rural y campesina y sus rasgos culturales tradicionales para dar paso a formas de vida mas tecnologicas y mecanizadas, fruto de la actual sociedad postindustrial y global. Y, por otra parte, da respuesta a una importante demanda social, disfrutar del patrimonio en los momentos de ocio y tiempo libre.
