Abstract
Bowen begins with a conundrum: how can the universalist religion Islam be specifically adapted to a French environment when Islam transcends national, regional, and ethnic particularities?On the other hand, can or should French Muslim leaders and practitioners create a variant of Islam that is consonant with highly secular and often anti-Islamic contemporary France?Bowen's intrepid scholarly decision to address this conundrum is made possible by his consultants' quotidian (and no less scholarly) struggles on the ground.Bowen addresses multiple, even conflicting, relationships between France and Islam with what he calls the anthropology of public reasoning, an approach he developed during his previous research in Indonesia.Although ethnography has more traditionally focused on people's everyday practices, Bowen's work with French Muslim community leaders emphasizes politicized debates in public settings.By choosing Muslim scholars, educators, and public figures, Bowen learns how they "configure a set of teachings and norms and institutions that will anchor Islam in France, for now but especially for the next generation" (p.5).
