Les diverses techniques de multiplication végétative à faible coût (MVfc) sont utiles pour les populations pauvres des zones tropicales et méditerranéennes qui veulent reproduire à l’identique un arbre sélectionné pour ses usages multiples (fruitier, fourrager, pour la pharmacopée, etc.), pour la réalisation de vergers, haies, brise-vent et parcs agroforestiers dans leurs champs. Ce sont des techniques très aisément reproductibles, qui n’exigent ni intrants coûteux, ni connaissances particulières, ni longue formation. Par rapport aux semis, la MVfc met à la disposition des agroforestiers et des populations rurales des plants à croissance plus rapide et à maturité plus précoce, ce qui raccourcit le retour sur investissement. Les populations rurales y sont très sensibles, notamment pour les espèces dioïques. Toutefois, les diverses techniques de la MVfc demeurent largement sous-utilisées en Afrique. Les avantages de ces techniques peu onéreuses, telles que l’induction de drageons, le bouturage de segments de racines, le marcottage terrestre ou aérien sont présentés dans cet article de synthèse.
