Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In the field of visual arts, the status of artists’ records has undergone significant changes since the 1960s. Traditionally considered the product of forces outside an actual work of art, documents themselves are now used in such a way as to transform them into artistic materials, and sometimes even into works of art. Archives have henceforth become a space for artistic practice, where artists can develop their critical outlook on the world. They can become part of a political work and initiate a call for action. This hypothesis is based on examining the photographs of press agencies collected by Montreal artist and architect, Melvin Charney: photographs depicting the relationship between buildings and current events. Titled “ UN DICTIONNAIRE… ” [A Dictionary], this work holds a complex place in Charney’s overall approach. In developing and organizing his body of work, the artist attempts to capture the complex transformations of urban spaces, and the social relationships that are played out in them. He continually draws from this fonds to create his interventions into public space and to introduce new concepts of social space. This article explores sequentially the inscription of the memory of cities into the urban fabric as a means of resisting modern urbanization, and the creation of public spaces dedicated to popular gatherings and democratic expression.
