Abstract
Introduction La grande majorite (75,8 %) des jeunes canadiens (âges entre 18 et 20 ans) obtiennent un diplome d'etudes secondaires et 12,8 % poursuivent leur education superieure. Cependant, 11,4 % des jeunes canadiens abandonnent l'ecole tot, la proportion de filles etant plus elevee que celle des garcons (14,7 % contre 9,2 %). Bien que les taux de decrochage aient diminue au cours des dix dernieres annees, de 18 % en 1991 (School Leavers Survey) a 11,4 % en 1999, les chiffres actuels representent 137 000 jeunes qui ne reussissent pas a completer une scolarite de base. Le decrochage precoce represente une perte a la fois pour l'individu et pour la communaute en terme de reduction de potentiel de contribution a la societe, ainsi qu'en termes de couts de chomage, de prestations sociales et d'autres services sociaux. En termes economiques, Cohen a determine qu'un seul decrocheur peut couter entre 234 000 et 388 000 $ US.
