Abstract
Havelock Ellis, a pioneer in the scientific study of sex, had a career that spanned the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth. He published many works on human sexual behavior, most famously the multi‐volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex , which appeared in numerous unabridged and abridged editions. Though his generation of sexologists has been accused by Michel Foucault and others of reinforcing ideals of normality that served the interests of the bourgeois state, Ellis advocated tolerance of a wide variety of sexual practices, as well as sex education, birth control, and acceptance for unwed mothers. He gathered data from a broad spectrum of individuals, many of whom wrote to him, as well as from copious reading. His acquaintances included many leading advocates of sexual and gender reforms, including Margaret Sanger, Olive Schreiner, and Bronislaw Malinowski.
