Abstract
Selon Lakoff et ses collaborateurs, l’être humain formule ses idées en ayant notamment recours à des « expressions métaphoriques » qui sont l’expression de surface de « métaphores conceptuelles » structurant un domaine : cela consiste à utiliser les termes et la structure conceptuelle d’un domaine pour en décrire un autre. De fait, plusieurs travaux montrent que l’énonciation scientifique, notamment dans le domaine biomédical, fait largement appel aux métaphores conceptuelles. En traduction, la formulation dans la langue d'arrivée pose précisément le problème de la cohérence des métaphores conceptuelles utilisées dans les deux langues. Grâce à des exemples tirés de textes biomédicaux en anglais et en français, nous analysons la correspondance des cartographies métaphoriques dans les deux langues. Une attention particulière est portée à la mise à l’épreuve des généralisations élaborées par Lakoff, notamment en ce qui a trait au « principe d’invariance » et à la polysémie.
