Abstract
Les gangs de rue captivent l’attention médiatique. Comment distinguer ces gangs d’autres types de bandes de jeunes? Le présent article se propose d’examiner le statut marginal de certaines bandes de jeunes en se focalisant sur les rapports à la violence dans les pratiques identitaires de ces jeunes. L’ambiguïté autour des notions de « jeune » et de « jeunesse » est dégagée afin de souligner le caractère relatif et liminaire, voire marginal, de ces catégories sociales. D’une part, l’étiquette jeune qui les caractérise colle de moins en moins à la réalité globale de ces groupes avec le vieillissement de ses leaders. D’autre part, ces groupes sont de mieux en mieux organisés criminellement alors que le côté improvisé de leur criminalité a toujours été un de leurs traits distinctifs. Aussi importe-t-il de distinguer les niveaux d’appartenance à ces groupes lorsqu’il s’agit d’aiguiller nos interventions.
