Les auteurs s’inspirent de la psychanalyse dans le but d’aider à assurer la rigueur en recherche qualitative en resituant le sujet et le chercheur au centre du processus de recherche. Ils proposent ainsi que le chercheur gagne à s’investir dans la relation avec le sujet. Il est cependant primordial de proposer certaines balises pouvant faire en sorte que cette interaction et les étapes suivantes de la recherche soient crédibles et empreintes de rigueur. Tout en présentant plusieurs concepts méthodologiques, ils suggèrent notamment que le chercheur embrasse le plus pleinement sa subjectivité et qu’il ait recours à un « tiers ».
