C'est un chercheur nerlandais, spcialiste de littrature anglaise La Haye, que nous devons cette tude biographique, qui fait toute la lumire sur un pisode peu connu, mais significatif, du sjour en Angleterre de Jean-Jacques Rousseau.Le sujet en est Sir Brooke Boothby (1744-1824), nobliau des Midlands anglais, dont la mmoire perdure de nos jours grce un tonnant portrait la Tate Britain de Londres, peint en 1781 par le grand artiste noclassique (et dj romantique), Joseph Wright of Derby : portrait qui nous prsente Brooke Boothby allong nonchalamment sur l'herbe dans un bosquet, au bord d'un ruisseau ( brook en anglais), coiff d'un grand chapeau noir, la main reposant sur deux grands livres.Mais de son vivant, son vritable titre de gloire tait de s'tre brivement li d'amiti avec Jean-Jacques Rousseau.On sait que celui-ci s'tait rfugi, grce l'entremise de David Hume, Wooton Hall dans le Staffordshire, en 1766-1767.Rousseau et Boothby, propritaire de Ashbourne Hall dans le comt limitrophe du Derbyshire, fraternisrent en tant que chtelains voisins, malgr leur diffrence d'ge, et en raison de leur amour commun de la botanique et l'habitude qu'ils avaient tous deux d'herboriser.Ils se rencontraient souvent dans ce mme bosquet romantique dpeint par Wright, dit des Vingt Chnes , que Rousseau adopta bientt comme lieu de rflexion et de recueillement.
