La National Association of Inpatient Physicians ha pasado de 23 fundadores en 1997 a la Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) con mas de 4.000 miembros en 2005. La seccion provisional de atencion hospitalaria de la American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) se ha convertido en la seccion de medicina hospitalaria y el grupo de interes especial (SIG, special interest group) de la Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA) ha evitado su antigua designacion del grupo de interes especial en la medicina hospitalaria/hospitalizacion y la ha sustituido por la de grupo de interes en medicina hospitalaria. El termino «hospitalista», la definicion de hospitalista y el campo han sido controvertidos desde sus comienzos. La National Association of Inpatient Physicians y la seccion provisional de la atencion hospitalaria de la AAP evitaron cuidadosamente utilizar el termino «hospitalista» en sus nombres originales.
