Abstract
Introducao: a dificuldade na adocao de habitos alimentares mais saudaveis e o estilo de vida sedentario, aliados a expectativa de perda de peso facil, induzem, de forma equivocada, a procura por metodos que promovam emagrecimento sem esforco, como a utilizacao de medicamentos para a reducao e/ou manutencao do peso constituidos por acido hidroxicitrico (HCA) extraido de Garcinia cambogia (garcinia), e gisenosideos, extraidos de Panax ginseng (ginseng). Porem, dados sobre o potencial toxico destes dois compostos quimicos sao pouco divulgados e os produtos do qual fazem parte da formulacao no Brasil sao de venda livre e consumidos indiscriminadamente. Objetivo: explicitar os resultados das principais pesquisas de avaliacao de toxicidade destes dois compostos com acao anorexigena. Metodos: para o desenvolvimento de tal objetivo foi realizada uma ampla pesquisa bibliografica em importantes bases de dados indexadas. Resultados e discussao: verificou-se que alguns trabalhos ja foram realizados porem e necessario que outros estudos sejam conduzidos, utilizando-se diferentes organismos de provas e diferentes doses destes compostos. Tambem foi observado que os resultados obtidos ate o momento muitas vezes sao contraditorios, sendo portanto, alvo de discussao entre os pesquisadores. Conclusao: assim, e de grande necessidade que mais pesquisas para avaliacao do efeito toxico destes compostos sejam feitas para se estabelecer, com propriedade, os limites de uso para a populacao.
