Neste artigo, busca-se identificar e interpretar as principais tendencias relativas a insercao dos jovens no mercado de trabalho, em um grupo selecionado de paises da Organizacao para a Cooperacao e Desenvolvimento Economico (OCDE) — Franca, Italia, Reino Unido, Alemanha, Estados Unidos e Canada —, nas ultimas duas decadas do seculo XX. A populacao jovem evidenciou taxas medias anuais de crescimento negativas no periodo em foco, culminando com uma queda de sua parcela relativa na Populacao em Idade Ativa (PIA) total das nacoes selecionadas. Condicionada por fatores demograficos e socioeconomicos, a forca de trabalho juvenil tambem apresentou queda no periodo em analise, com o que se reduziu a sua participacao no mercado de trabalho. De acordo com a interpretacao sugerida por este estudo, a maior incidencia do desemprego entre os jovens — a excecao da Alemanha — deve-se, principalmente, ao desempenho macroeconomico das nacoes selecionadas no periodo em analise.
