Florence Bretelle-Establet et Frdric Keck 1 L'histoire des pidmies est rvlatrice des peurs en Occident 2 . Parmi l'ensemble des menaces diffuses qui psent sur l'individu, l'pidmie tranche par son caractre soudain, brutal et collectif : elle se manifeste comme une catastrophe dans la vie quotidienne. On distingue alors de la maladie chronique, qui peut fragiliser l'individu, la maladie infectieuse qui semble affecter le groupe social de l'extrieur 3 . Sa capacit passer de corps en corps met au dfi les conceptions tablies de la socit, dont elle rvle les vulnrabilits. Lorsque le mal s'empare d'un corps, nul ne sait jusqu'o il s'tendra : les barrires du village ou de la ville ne suffisent pas, les collectifs dj en place sont dbords. Si l'motion souleve par l'pidmie s'apaise d'abord en dsignant un coupable du mal pour l'expulser et le dtruire, l'enqute vise ensuite cerner le lieu d'o il part pour le contrler et l'tudier. L'pidmie est alors l'occasion de cartographier les espaces et les corps qui s'y inscrivent. Aussi la squence des grandes pidmies raconte-t-elle, pour un historien de l'environnement, les tapes de la transformation de l'Occident : guerres civiles (peste, typhus), conqute du Nouveau Monde (variole), rvolution industrielle (cholra, syphilis, tuberculose) 4 .
