Abstract
1993년 캐나다연방선거는 오랫동안 계속된 카르텔정당체계의 해체를 의미하였다. 캐나다정치체계의 반협의체적 성격에도 불구하고 정당체계는 오랫동안 단일균열구조의 양당 또는 2.5당체계에 의하여 운영되어 왔다. 1992년 퀘벡정당의 출범은 이러한 보수 대 진보라는 산업사회적 균열구조에 후기산업사회적 균열구조가 중첩됨과 동시에 지역주의와 보편주의라는 전통적인 균열구조를 재등장시킴으로써 캐나다정당체계를 근본적으로 뒤흔든 잊을 수 없는 선거였다. 퀘벡주 내의 주정치에만 관여하던 퀘벡당이 퀘벡정당의 이름으로 연방정치에 등장하면서 연방정당체계는 다차원의 균열구조가 자리잡게 되었다. 퀘벡정당은 지역주의와 자유해방주의가 결합됨으로써 폭발력을 가지게 되었으며, 퀘벡정당의 자유해방주의적 성격은 퀘벡정당에 대항하여 서부지역을 기반으로 성공한 개혁당의 민중주의적 신우파의 성격에서도 확인된다.
