Abstract
Édition d’un contrat notarié (26 juillet 1681) entre le graveur John Hainzelman et le sculpteur Pierre-Simon Jaillot. Le buriniste a six mois pour terminer de graver trois plaques de cuivre destinées à se réunir d’après un « tableau » que lui a fourni Pierre-Simon Jaillot et représentant un crucifix. Il a reçu une avance de trois cent cinquante et une livres sur les mille quatre cents livres qu’il doit toucher. Les armoiries et la lettre, y compris la dédicace, seront gravées par un spécialiste choisi par Jaillot aux frais de Hainzelman et les quelques épreuves d’essai effectuées dans l’atelier du frère du commanditaire. Jaillot étant mort subitement le 23 septembre 1681, le contrat est repris par son frère Alexis-Hubert, qui publie l’estampe en 1683. Deux épreuves de l’estampe en question sont localisées à Vienne (Albertina, Inv. DG23052) et Paris (BnF, Estampes, SNR-3 (Jaillot)). Une étape intermédiaire entre le crucifix d’ivoire et l’estampe est constituée d’un tableau de Louis Licherie : on connaît deux autres gravures de crucifix de Jaillot qui se trouvent dans le même cas, respectivement gravées par Hainzelman et Étienne Picart (le Romain). En annexe est publiée la liste des œuvres de Pierre-Simon Jaillot telles qu’elles sont décrites dans son inventaire après décès.
