Depuis la Charte d’Ottawa (1986), la majorité des régions du monde a fait des avancées considérables en matière de promotion de la santé (PS) et dispose de cadres de réflexion, de méthodologies et outils dans le domaine. En Afrique, la PS a été adoptée par les pays membres du Bureau régional Afrique de l’OMS depuis 2001. Cependant de nombreux efforts restent à déployer au niveau des pays pour son appropriation dans le contexte du triple fardeau des maladies transmissibles, non-transmissibles et sociocomportementales qui pèsent sur la région. L’ Afrique francophone commence à peine à faire ses premiers pas dans la reconnaissance et l’adoption de cette approche. Elle privilégie cependant des stratégies telles que l’information, éducation et communication (IEC), l’éducation pour la santé (EpS), la communication pour le changement de comportement (CCC), la mobilisation sociale, le marketing social, etc. Les choses se disent et se font sous couvert de la PS sans pour autant en revêtir les caractéristiques. Quelle est la situation actuelle de la PS en Afrique francophone ? La particularité de son évolution dans cette région et les orientations de la pratique des professionnels au regard des préoccupations prioritaires de la région, méritent une réflexion. C’est la question à laquelle il est proposé de répondre dans cet article. Nous passerons en revue, entre autres, l’histoire et les enjeux de la PS, puis brièvement les différents concepts et stratégies utilisés. Nous terminerons par le potentiel de développement de la PS dans la région.
