Longtemps resté dans l’orbite de Simon Vouet, l’œuvre de Michel Corneille le père reprend corps depuis une trentaine d’années et l’exposition organisée en 2006 au musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans a été une belle occasion de faire le point sur l’activité de l’artiste. Il reste encore des découvertes à faire et deux dessins inédits (un dans une collection particulière, l’autre au département des Estampes et de la Photographie de la Bibliothèque nationale de France) viennent s’ajouter au corpus de Michel Corneille le père et montrer la grande évolution stylistique de celui-ci. C’est l’occasion de revenir sur les débuts de Michel Corneille le fils, dont l’œuvre est alors étroitement lié à celui de son père, et de proposer de rendre à ce dernier l’invention de deux gravures, le Portrait d’Étienne Biset Deflacourt et L’Enfant couché dans la crèche. Si Michel Corneille le père ne semble n’avoir jamais gravé, son fils deviendra un aquafortiste talentueux et il serait heureux que cet artiste, peintre et dessinateur prolifique, bénéficie lui aussi prochainement d’un catalogue monographique.
