Abstract Objective: To present the results of a study of the current state of preparation and administration of hazardous drugs in Quebec. Context: The Association paritaire pour la sante et la securite du travail, social affairs sector, formed a committee on hazardous drugs. The committee presented a descriptive study based on a survey carried out by e-mail from May 1 to June 6, 2006. The questionnaire was sent to pharmacists-in-chief of all Quebec hospitals with a least 50 short-stay beds. One major finding pointed to a lack of awareness of guidelines. Although the policies and procedures are not a panacea, the study revealed the need to thoroughly update more than half of the current principles of practice. In addition, a rate of conformity of less than 50 % was seen for 17 of the 40 rules of practice that were evaluated. Finally, the Corporation d’hebergement du Quebec is currently developing norms regarding the infrastructure of oncology pharmacies, which should be quite useful given the obsolete nature and wide variation of current layouts. Conclusion: This portrays the current situation in Quebec healthcare establishments regarding the preparation and administration of hazardous drugs. Key Words : Preparation, administration, hazardous drugs, cytotoxic drugs, oncology.
