Le caractère foisonnant des publications et la multiplicité des lieux de recherche sur la caricature du xixe siècle ont pour contrepartie son inscription dans une perspective diachronique bien établie par l’historiographie depuis une trentaine d’années, comme l’est aussi la définition du genre et de son registre d’expression. Après ce premier cadrage, l’article aborde les fonds de caricatures de « l’âge du papier » (Félix Vallotton) et les publications qui leur sont associées, dans un tour d’horizon français et international. Les thèses témoignent du caractère multidisciplinaire des recherches académiques. Les colloques et les expositions, souvent liés aux commémorations, sont importants pour le domaine. Les perspectives actuelles – l’histoire du corps et de sa déformation, l’intermédialité et la géopolitique de la caricature – s’affirment dans les revues spécialisées dans la caricature et l’humour, aujourd’hui bien diffusées par les sites Internet.
