El Departamento de Ingenieria Geomatica de la Universidad de Calgary esta desarrollando un sistema de cartografia movil portatil (MMS) de bajo coste. La finalidad del sistema es superar las deficiencias de los actuales sistemas de cartografia movil, es decir, sus altos costes, gran tamano y complejidad, que han restringido su adopcion por la industria topografica. El desarrollo de un sistema de este tipo satisface la demanda de un sistema de cartografia movil que pueda competir, tanto en coste como en sencillez de uso, con los actuales sistemas GPS y de levantamientos terrestres convencionales. El sistema integra una brujula magnetica digital, un receptor GPS de frecuencia dual y una camara digital en un sistema cartografico de multisensones. El GPS suministra estimaciones de la posicion de la camara en las estaciones de exposicion y la brujula ofrece una estimacion de la posicion espacial de dicha camara. Estas estimaciones de la orientacion exterior se emplean luego como observaciones ponderadas de los parametros en un ajuste por haces. En este articulo se examinan las precisiones absolutas y relativas del sistema en el espacio objeto empleando distintas distancias puntuales entre la camara y el objeto y distinto numero de imagenes y de mediciones puntuales en las mismas. Se han logrado precisiones absolutas inferiores a los 25 cm con tres imagenes y una distancia del objeto a la camara de 20 m. Esta precision es comparable a la de los actuales sistemas GPS de frecuencia unica. El acuerdo interno de los puntos levantados mediante este sistema es inferior a los lO cm. Tambien se examina el efecto de incluir observaciones adicionales.
