L'ouvrage se veut une rencontre autour de l'œuvre d'Isabelle de Charrière (1740-1805), compositrice de neuf opéras, fortement influencée par le style italien, dont la deuxième partie, la plus brève, offre une étude de cas développant notamment une analyse de ses livrets et de ses succès en Suisse et à Turin.La première partie, sur laquelle nous insisterons dans l'espace de ce compte rendu, présente plus globalement les femmes auteurs d'opéras, leur formation, les barrières institutionnelles qu'elles durent surmonter pour faire jouer leurs œuvres dans les théâtres parisiens, leur réputation et leur postérité -Marie-Emmanuelle Bayon-Louis (1746-1825), Florine Dezède (1765-1792), Marie Favart (1727-1772), Lucile Grétry (1772-1790), Caroline Wuiet (1766-1835), Julie Candeille (1767-1834), Henriette Beaumesnil (1748-1813), Constance de Salm (1767-1845), Jeanne-Hippolyte Devismes (1765-1834 ?), Sophie Bawr (1773-1860) et Sophie Gail (1776-1852) sont donc les autres « héroïnes » principales de ce travail.Historiens, littéraires, musicologues et spécialistes du féminisme, largement issus des universités américaines (quoique ait été sollicitée l'aide de collègues néerlandais, suisse et québécois) se sont rencontrés sur ces personnalités et sur ces thèmes, résultats de recherches menées entre 1997 et 1999, notamment en France, qui se sont appuyées entre autres sur la restitution scénique des œuvres étudiées.
