Abstract
In February 2004, over a hundred students, staff and guests gathered at the University of Toronto for an international symposium on “Populations in Transition: The Health of Circumpolar Indigenous Peoples”. The symposium featured invited speakers and participants from Alaska, Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Norway, Russia and from across Canada. A variety of issues were examined, including dietary changes, children’s mental health, environmental contaminants, research priorities, and the impact of a changing economy. Ms Ann Kjeldsen, deputy director of health for Greenland’s Home Rule Government, delivered the keynote address. Among the participants were representatives of academic research centres, indigenous people’s organizations, regional health authorities, professional associations, and government agencies involved in health care, the environment and northern development.
